Knowing the city of Salamanca
Salamanca is a city in western Spain, the capital of the province of Salamanca, which belongs to the autonomous community (region) of Castile-Leon (Castilla y León).
A Monumental City
This charming town is untouched in it's architectural purity. In central areas all recent buildings are constructed in Salamanca's best tradition. The city has been declared "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO.
Salamanca and the history
The city's name is linked to Greek historians who called it Helmantike, Hermándica and Salamántica. Alfonso X (The Wise) was the first person to call it Salamanca.
The Golden City
Salamanca has been a cultural magnet for writers, philosophers and historical figures, including Miguel de Cervantes, Fray Luis de León, Hernán Cortés, San Juan de la Cruz, and musician Maestro Salinas.
Plaza Mayor
Salamanca is a jewel of architecture: the baroque Plaza Mayor, the most beautiful plaza in all of Spain with its impressive arches as entrances, was built between 1729-1755.
Salamanca Town
Salamanca is probably best known for having the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. The liveliest city of Old Castile which attracts thousands of Spanish language students from all over the world.
